Fike Corporation’s third‑generation leadership manufactures solutions to prevent catastrophic industrial fires and explosions worldwide

Beginning as a metal fabrication business in 1945, Fike Corporation (Fike) was founded in Independence, Missouri by Les Fike Snr. Following a request from a large company to manufacture rupture discs, the founder agreed, and his response launched what would become Fike: a global life safety organization which spans three generations of leadership. Today, the company is headquartered in Blue Springs, Missouri and has grown from a start-up into a globally recognized supplier of industrial safety solutions installed across a wide spectrum of industries, including pharmaceutical operations, telecommunications, food processing plants and hightech data centers.

Serving Fortune 500 organizations and critical facilities around the world, Fike is a specialist in precisionengineered protection technologies, with products designed to prevent catastrophic events rather than simply respond to them. From humble beginnings, the company has built an international footprint that reflects the critical nature of its mission. In addition to its US operations, the business operates manufacturing facilities in Belgium, Wales, Canada, and India, supported by sales and service offices throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, ensuring customers have local expertise backed by a consistent global standard of safety.

CEO Brad Batz talks to Construction Today about the company’s groundbreaking Fike Labs facility and revolutionary Fike Blue technology. “The initial business was actually created by Les in the basement of his house,” starts Brad. “He was approached by the chemical company in 1955 and that’s where the story of Fike began – these origins truly capture the innovative and entrepreneurial spirit of the Corporation.” Following that first rupture disc, Fike discovered broader applications for the technology, particularly in fire and explosion protection. Today, the company focuses on three core areas: pressure relief for overpressure situations, explosion protection for dust explosions in industrial environments, and fire protection for data centers and other high-value assets. Across all three, Fike handles the full process in-house – from design and engineering through to manufacturing.

“We now have over 1,300 employees across the globe,” continues Brad. “My two brothers and I are in the third generation leading the organization forward, and we’ve remained a family business throughout all of it. Our intent is to remain family held so that we can continue a noble cause, purpose-driven style of business. Our vision is to eliminate catastrophic loss of life and assets for companies around the globe.”

Thought leadership

Fike’s commitment manifests in Fike Labs; its state-of-the-art testing facility. “We’re seen as thought leaders in the market because of our investment in research and development,” Brad reveals. “The journey started with land near Blue Springs, Missouri, featuring a quarry where we carry out a lot of explosion protection testing. This entails physically blowing things up to understand the science of how flame propagates down a pipe, or what happens during this phenomenon, so that we can design products to mitigate those situations.” He adds: “We’ve invested heavily and bought all the land around our quarry, where we built Fike Labs. This is a 50,000 square foot test facility, where we’re centralizing all that testing capability. We named it Fike Labs purposefully so that it would connect with the history of Fike but also showcase our investment and fly the flag as thought leaders in the industry.”

One of the latest Fike innovations is Fike Blue – a combination of fire protection and explosion protection in the lithium-ion battery energy storage space. In fact, it is the first patented product worldwide to stop cascading thermal runaway. “Fike Blue is FDA-approved and it’s extremely environmentally safe,” highlights Brad. “It’s unique and I believe it’s going to springboard us into new opportunities around the world.” However, Brad acknowledges that Fike Blue is not a product that anyone can purchase because its safe and reliable application is reliant on the process of lithium battery testing, system design, validation and much more. Fike Labs will quadruple Fike’s current lithium battery testing and research capabilities. “At present, the technology is not ready to be sold as a distributed product, because every battery array is an application that needs to be proved and qualified. We must solve every battery first. They are being installed all over the world though and there is a huge opportunity for future business, not only to protect what is already there but also to learn and innovate even further.”

Long-term ambitions

As the company has evolved over the past 80 years, Fike has transitioned from manufacturer to solutions provider. Originally being product-focused, it has more recently shifted towards selling knowledge through a consultancy approach, alongside risk assessments and dust testing for new construction and processes. “We’re actively helping to design a consistent solution for building 30 data centers across the globe,” Brad elaborates. “We’re taking more of a solutions approach versus just a product approach. It’s evolving into a design, engineer, build and self-perform type of business.” Furthermore, private ownership has fundamentally shaped business strategy. “There’s no end game with Fike,” states Brad. “We’re not driving to a valuation. Being privately held the way that we are, we measure ourselves in generations, as opposed to quarterly earnings windows like a publicly traded company. That allows us time to see things through. We’re committed and we’re in it for the long term.” This philosophy extends to how Fike measures success, as Brad concludes: “We’re not beholden to shareholder value. We call it stakeholder value because it’s not only ownership, but most importantly, it’s the customers and the employees we have around the world. We’ve unified successfully as one company and our global connections are strong. We try to create an environment where they feel safe and assured that they have a long-term career. And that’s something that I think is immensely powerful behind the brand of Fike.”
