Heb Group is the driving force behind safe, compliant, and high-performing commercial, public, and residential spaces
Heb Group has been making buildings work better for over 100 years. Established in Sheffield in 1923 by Horace Edward Barnes, the business began as a small but ambitious electrical contracting firm and has grown into one of the region’s most trusted integrated building services providers.
“Over the past century, we’ve evolved with our clients and the industries we serve,” Nigel Pollard, Group Managing Director, begins. “From our roots in electrical installations, we’ve expanded into full Mechanical & Electrical (M&E) design, installation and commissioning, nationwide Facilities Management (FM) solutions, and professional Cleaning & Hygiene (C&H) services. Each division complements the other, allowing us to deliver seamless, end-to-end building and maintenance support under one trusted group.
“Our head office remains in Sheffield, supported by regional hubs in Leeds, St Helens and Doncaster, giving us strong coverage across Yorkshire and the Northwest, while maintaining the same customer focus and family values we were founded on.
“In 2019, we strengthened our group offering through the acquisition of Solutions4Cleaning, enhancing our soft FM and hygiene expertise. This division has since been reshaped and rebranded to Heb Cleaning & Hygiene, reflecting its capabilities and integration into our wider group. This step positions Heb Group as a single point of contact for clients who want reliable, compliant, and cost-effective building solutions.
“A century on, we continue to grow with purpose, combining technical expertise, innovation, and a people-first culture to support clients in sectors including healthcare, education, industrial, commercial, retail and public services. Our history gives us credibility; our people give us momentum. Together, they make Heb Group the power behind every day.”
End-to-end approach
Heb Group’s M&E division is the foundation of the business. It handles everything from HVAC, lighting, and power distribution through to fire alarms, data systems, renewables and Building Management Systems (BMS). “Our team works closely with clients and design partners from concept to completion,” Nigel continues, “ensuring every system is efficient, compliant and built to last.
“Our FM division ensures buildings remain safe, compliant and operational long after installation. We provide nationwide planned and reactive maintenance, 24/7 emergency support, statutory testing, water hygiene, and building fabric repairs. With our CAFM system, Joblogic, we offer clients real-time visibility of maintenance schedules, asset performance, and compliance records, giving them confidence that every site is fully managed and audit ready.”
The C&H division delivers professional cleaning and hygiene solutions across a wide range of sectors. Services include daily contract cleaning, deep cleans, washroom management, waste handling, and event cleaning. This division also incorporates Heb Group’s Security offering, providing manned guarding, mobile patrols, alarm response and CCTV monitoring to protect people and property.
“What sets Heb Group apart is our ability to connect these disciplines seamlessly,” Nigel explains. “We don’t just deliver isolated services, we provide a complete, end-to-end approach that keeps buildings performing at their best every day. Whether we’re designing new systems, maintaining critical assets, or ensuring environments remain clean and safe, our goal is always the same: to make our clients’ buildings work better.”
Heb Group operates across a wide range of sectors, providing both specialist and scalable solutions that adapt to the needs of each client and environment. Core experience spans education, healthcare, industrial, commercial, retail, housing, and public sector projects, where safety, compliance, and reliability are critical to success.
“In healthcare,” Nigel elaborates, “we deliver complex M&E installations and maintenance for NHS Trusts, including live hospital environments and clinical refurbishments where precision and safety are paramount.”
Best practices
Indeed, the company recently completed the full mechanical and electrical fit-out for the new Community Diagnostic Centre at Albion Square, Hull; a flagship healthcare project delivered in partnership with Vinci Construction and Hull Teaching Hospital NHS Trust. The development forms part of a wider £18 million NHS initiative funded through a partnership between Hull City Council, NHS England, and the Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board. The project aims to transform the former Albion Square site into a state-of-the-art diagnostic facility that will ease pressure on hospital services and accelerate access to early diagnosis for patients. This specialist facility demanded the highest standards of technical delivery, compliance, and coordination. From design to commissioning, the team worked to an extremely tight programme to ensure the centre could open its doors on schedule.
“Similarly, in education, we support local authorities and national frameworks to design, build and maintain schools, academies, and universities, helping create efficient, future-ready learning spaces. Meanwhile, our industrial and commercial work ranges from logistics hubs and manufacturing plants to offices, laboratories and mixed-use developments, ensuring that every system is designed for performance, sustainability, and ease of maintenance.
“This breadth of experience gives us a unique advantage. Working across such diverse environments means our teams bring proven ideas, technical standards and best practices from one sector to another. The same meticulous planning we apply in healthcare translates to high safety and compliance standards in education. Likewise, the energy efficiency principles from industrial projects inform smarter office and retail installations.”
Exceptional service
By combining this cross-sector knowledge with a consistent in-house team, including designers, engineers, and specialists, Heb Group can offer clients a joined-up approach that reduces risk, improves coordination, and enhances long-term value. Regardless of the sector, the company’s focus remains the same: delivering safe, efficient, and sustainable environments that enable people and businesses to perform at their best.
The FM division has been one of Heb Group’s fastest growing areas in recent years, evolving from a support function within the M&E business into a fully-fledged national provider.
“Our FM offering now provides complete lifecycle management for buildings, from routine mechanical and electrical maintenance to statutory testing, fire safety compliance, water hygiene, and building fabric repairs,” Nigel expands. “This growth has been underpinned by a strong leadership team, headed by Nick Barker, Group Facilities Management Director, and supported by a nationwide network of mobile engineers and a 24/7 helpdesk.
“A key driver of our growth has been our ability to build long-term partnerships and deliver exceptional service that leads to repeat business. Most recently, we secured a major new contract with our existing client, Stonegate Group, which has doubled the size of the FM division and significantly expanded our national footprint. This success reinforces our belief that the best way to grow is by deepening relationships with the clients who already trust us, proving the value of consistency, communication, and performance over time.”
Transparency and consistency
Heb Group’s ambition to grow the division to £20 million in annual revenue rests on three key pillars: integration, technology, and people. “We’re also targeting further growth through framework partnerships and long-term service contracts, particularly within the public and healthcare sectors where compliance and reliability are paramount,” Nigel adds. “Ultimately, our goal is to become one of the UK’s most trusted integrated FM partners, combining the responsiveness of a regional contractor with the capability and professionalism of a national provider.”
Technology plays an increasingly central role in how Heb Group delivers its services, driving greater efficiency, transparency, and performance across every part of the business. From design and pre-construction through to live maintenance, cleaning operations, and client reporting, Heb Group uses digital tools to improve accuracy, reduce downtime, and provide better outcomes for customers.
“In our M&E division, we use BIM modelling and 3D design software to coordinate complex systems at the earliest stages of a project,” Nigel shares. “This ensures every service route, component and installation is planned with precision, reducing risk and creating certainty before a single tool reaches site. It allows clients to visualise designs early, make informed decisions, and achieve smoother project delivery with fewer variations and delays.
“Within FM, our CAFM platform, Joblogic, has completely transformed the way we plan, deliver, and monitor work. Engineers receive real-time updates through mobile devices, clients can log and track jobs through a dedicated portal, and all certificates, test results, and compliance records are stored digitally for complete traceability. This visibility enables us to be proactive rather than reactive; identifying potential issues before they become problems and ensuring every building we manage remains safe, compliant, and efficient.
“Our C&H division,” he continues, “also benefits from digital scheduling and reporting systems that enhance accountability and quality control. Site supervisors use mobile technology to track attendance, record performance checks, and instantly share updates or photos with clients. This ensures transparency, consistency, and faster communication across multiple sites, something that’s especially important for our larger contracts in education, healthcare and retail.”
Powered by people
Across the Group, the team is also embracing data-led decision-making and building performance analytics. Smart technologies such as BMS optimisation, energy monitoring, and remote fault detection help clients understand how their buildings operate, enabling them to optimise energy use, and reduce carbon impact, supporting both cost efficiency and sustainability.
“As the industry continues to evolve, we see technology as more than just a set of tools, it’s a mindset. By combining innovation with the skill and experience of our people, we’re creating more connected, transparent, and responsive ways of working that deliver measurable value and long-term benefits for our clients,” Nigel enthuses.
Through its dedicated brand, SustainHEBility, Heb Group is driving environmental and social responsibility across every facet of the business. The company’s approach centres on three key areas. First, the environment, where it is reducing emissions and waste using hybrid and electric vehicles, smarter logistics, and energy-efficient design. It is also committed to championing renewable energy, sustainable materials, and low-carbon systems across all its M&E projects.
Equally important are Heb Group’s people and communities. Through the Heb Academy and the Heb Foundation, the team supports apprenticeships, skills development, and community initiatives that help individuals and local areas thrive.
Finally, a focus on governance ensures that transparency, ethical procurement, and compliance are upheld throughout the organisation’s supply chain. Heb Group is working towards recognised environmental accreditations and a clear, structured pathway to net-zero operations.
“Our culture is built around one simple belief; we are Powered by People,” Nigel affirms. “Everything we achieve stems from the skill, dedication, and attitude of our teams. We place a huge emphasis on creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and proud of what they do.
“Our approach to employee engagement starts with communication and inclusion. We make sure every colleague understands the part they play in the success of the business. Development is another major focus for us,” he continues. “We invest heavily in training, apprenticeships, and qualifications across every trade and professional discipline. Our apprenticeships and internal mentoring programmes are helping to develop the next generation of engineers, managers, and support staff, while ongoing technical and leadership training ensures that everyone continues to progress throughout their career.
“We’re also developing the Heb Academy, an internal learning and development platform designed to formalise training, promote career progression, and build future leaders from within the business. We encourage teamwork, mutual respect, and a balance between professional excellence and personal wellbeing.
“Culturally, we remain true to the values that have guided us since 1923: Safety First, Honesty, Passion, Improvement, and Teamwork. Those principles define how we operate, how we communicate, and how we support one another. They underpin a workplace culture that’s inclusive, forward-thinking, and genuinely people powered.”
2026 will be a year of consolidation to support Heb Group’s growth. The team has built strong momentum following its centenary celebrations, and the focus now is on embedding the systems, culture, and efficiencies that will sustain growth well into the next decade.
“In the year ahead, our priorities are focused on growth, integration, and innovation,” Nigel shares. “We’re also strengthening our Renewables and Decarbonisation offering, building on our technical expertise to help clients transition to cleaner, smarter energy solutions that align with the UK’s net-zero goals. With these initiatives in motion, we are forecasting Group turnover to reach £65 million by the financial year ending March 2026.
“In five years, we aim to be recognised as one of the UK’s most respected and trusted integrated building services providers known for our technical excellence, reliability, and commitment to people and sustainability. By 2030, our ambition is to achieve £100 million in turnover, underpinned by steady, sustainable growth rather than acquisition or compromise. We’ll continue to invest in innovation embracing digital systems, data-led maintenance, renewables, and smart building solutions.
“A key enabler of this growth will be our People Framework, which sits at the heart of the Heb Academy. It’s designed to support our future growth by empowering teams, nurturing leadership, and ensuring every colleague feels part of the Heb journey. The framework will be vital in attracting, retaining, and developing the talent of the future, building a workforce that’s capable, motivated, and aligned with our purpose,” Nigel concludes. “Ultimately, our goal is simple: to keep making buildings work better for people, for business, and for the planet.”
