How do you define industry leadership? For A&H Construction & Developments, it’s about quality, efficiency, and craftsmanship

Founded in 1986, A&H Construction & Developments (A&H Construction) is a family-owned company defined by quality, value, and innovation. Initially established from small roots in the West Midlands, the company’s journey has been one abundant in strategic growth and evolution, from the size and complexity of the projects it delivers to its ever-increasing diverse scope of service capabilities. Today, A&H Construction has expanded to undertake works within all sectors of the construction industry, from smaller refurbishments to significant, multi-million-pound developments across the country. Amidst this growth, however, the company’s value proposition has always remained the same: to provide outstanding quality, efficiency, and attention to detail in all its projects and partnerships.

Investing in people and processes

With 2026 marking A&H Construction’s 40th anniversary milestone, Construction & Civil Engineering sits down with Steve Cutler, the company’s Construction Director, and Rob Mottram, Estimating Director, to uncover the projects, investments, and core values that have attributed to four decades of success. Steve begins by sharing insight into A&H Construction’s people-centric culture and how it drives the high standards of service and integrity for which the company is known.

“We take pride in bringing together a diverse group of inspiring individuals with a wide range of skills, providing a complete team of experts. We believe in the importance of supporting our workforce both professionally and personally, providing the best working environment, equipment and facilities available, so that they can perform at their best,” he details. “In addition to creating an environment of staff wellness, we nurture a culture of support within our team. Safety is our primary concern and it is always foremost in our preparation for any project. We continue to strive for improvement on our impeccable health & safety record by working closely with our clients, designers and suppliers, utilising such processes as behavioural safety.”

Aligning with this philosophy and culture, the company’s commitment to continuous improvement permeates every facet of its operations – particularly in its wider investment program. As such, A&H Construction has invested heavily in technology, IT, and its management systems over the past few years, implemented to further enhance its procurement and supplier integration processes whilst supporting its larger-scale projects as it continues to grow.

Commitment to innovation

Louise Smith, Company Secretary, states: “Over the course of the past few years, we have heavily invested in our IT and management system, maximising our usage of the latest technology available to streamline our productivity and performance,” Rob explains. “An area of focus for us has been undertaking site audits live via an application on mobile phones and tablets whilst on site. We have recently introduced a pre-induction process for operatives coming to work on our sites via an application, which has significantly reduced the time required for a site induction. Our suppliers have embraced our advancement in new technologies, with many following suit on similar systems. The pre-induction process via the application has been hugely successful with our suppliers; once they have successfully completed the pre-induction process, they are not required to complete another pre-induction should they move onto one of our other construction sites.”

By virtue of this unwavering commitment to innovation, A&H Construction has extended its expertise to a multitude of projects throughout the country – all varying in size, scale, and complexity. The company consistently provides fully integrated services to its clients. Working from initial design conception through to robust construction and delivery, it upholds the highest standards of quality, value, and proficiency. Reflecting on both the year just passed and the pipeline ahead, Steve and Rob share some of the recent projects that showcase the very best of A&H Construction’s capabilities, starting with its ongoing development at Silverstone Park, Towcester.

“Silverstone is a high specification, multi-unit research and development scheme that we are delivering for MEPC Silverstone, adjacent to the Silverstone GP Circuit in Towcester,” Steve elaborates. “The project comprises four buildings split into 12 units, totalling 100,000 square feet. We have recently handed over the first of the four blocks, comprising two units, with the remaining three blocks scheduled to be handed over early this year.

Impressive project portfolio

“We also completed a significant project in Merseyside in March 2025, which comprised a single industrial unit totalling 270,000 square feet,” he continues. “The project was delivered for Tritax Big Box, whom we have worked with for many years now and have several schemes upcoming. The project was successfully delivered on time and to an extremely high-quality level.”

“Additionally, we have recently commenced another new project in Haydock, Merseyside for our long-established client, Canmoor. The project comprises the construction of four industrial units totalling 290,000 square feet, with the scheduled completion set for August 2026,” Rob adds.

Our most notable upcoming developments are two units at Symmetry Park, Bicester, totalling 270,000 square feet, and at Vantage Way, Birmingham, which involves the refurbishment and extension of an existing unit and construction of two new units totalling 370,000 square feet.”

This exceptional and efficient project delivery, however, is not the only stream where A&H Construction is able to highlight its excellence. Adjacent to the people-centric ethos that Steve emphasises, ESG runs through the company’s core, from its commitment to sustainability and Net Zero through to its plenitude of community engagement initiatives –which include its longstanding sponsorship of Old Halesonians Rugby Club, participation in charity events such as the London Marathon, and outreach to local schools.

“As a prominent construction company throughout the United Kingdom, we believe that it is our responsibility to enhance local communities through the way we work,” Rob says. “We believe in stepping up and making changes we want to see in the world. We are very proud of the work our team does to support those in need. We have a long history of engaging with charities and communities. Through the projects that we’ve undertaken and with the assistance of our suppliers, we provide job opportunities for the local unemployed, deliver talks within local schools and colleges, and offer local schools and colleges the opportunity to visit our projects.”

Discussing the company’s Net Zero goals, fellow Commercial Director Paul Davenport adds: “We’re committed to constantly and proactively improving the sustainability of our projects, as well as ensuring that we’re making a positive impact on the environment around us. Our approach to sustainability is multifaceted, from the use of environmentally sustainable materials in our construction projects through to the construction of environmentally sustainable, energy-efficient, buildings, whilst minimising pollution and waste during the process. We have successfully delivered several net-zero carbon projects in recent years, including the UK’s first net-zero carbon DPD depot in Bicester.

“As a business, we are committed to reducing our carbon emissions, which is why we obtained our PlanetMark Business Certification several years ago. PlanetMark is an internationally recognised symbol of sustainability, demonstrating our business’ commitment to measuring and reducing our carbon emissions year on year.”

With 2025 having marked another highly successful year for A&H Construction, the company is well-positioned for further growth and innovation throughout 2026. By upholding its renowned quality, efficiency, and attention to detail, the business can be confident for the bright future ahead whilst celebrating its 40th anniversary.

“We firmly believe the longevity and success of the company is down to its people. A high proportion of our staff have been with us for many years, which, in construction is extremely unique. After all, as a principal construction contractor, our people are the business,” Steve affirms, reflecting on A&H Construction’s journey thus far.

“Our primary focus for the year ahead is to continue our sustained growth by maintaining our excellent working relationships with our current clients whilst establishing new. Furthermore, as sustainability and net zero carbon has come to the forefront of construction, it is our aim to continue to expand our capabilities within these areas.”

“It is our hope that the business will deliver the sustained growth we predict over the next three to five years,” Rob says, concluding our conversation. “Essential to that will be our continued delivery of consistent high-end quality projects which are sustainable and thereby, contribute to achieving net-zero carbon in construction.”

As our interview draws to a close, it’s clear that A&H Construction has cemented its position as a true market leader in the UK’s construction industry. With an abundance of further growth on the horizon, the company looks forward to undertaking even more projects whilst expanding its supplier base, and is keen to encourage interested partners to get in touch. Having spent four decades transforming A&H Construction into the multi-million-pound powerhouse it is today, Steve will be retiring in April, with Rob succeeding his position as Lead Director.

In terms of further succession planning, which forms a fundamental part of the company’s culture, A&H Construction is also proud to promote Brett Cartwright, and Mike McQuillan to Directors, who have each been with the business for over ten years, with George Smith, the grandson of Managing Director, Barry Adams, continuing to evolve his role as the years progress. No matter what the future holds however, A&H Construction’s strong strategic planning, brilliant team, and commitment to operational excellence will drive its success for many more decades to come.
