How HH Construction built a stellar reputation across Yorkshire – one project at a time

Founded in 2008, HH Construction has grown into one of Yorkshire’s leading groundworks and civil engineering contractors, earning a reputation for quality, reliability, and long-standing client relationships across Yorkshire, Humberside, and the Northwest. As a family-run business with nearly two decades of industry experience, the company has developed into a trusted one-stop shop for civil engineering and surfacing solutions, delivering projects across the commercial, retail, social, and private housing sectors.

Built on a commitment to exceptional service and technical expertise, HH Construction offers a comprehensive range of capabilities, including remediation and earthworks, substructure and reinforced concrete, drainage and utility ducting, as well as surfacing and external works. Supported by a highly skilled and dedicated team, the company has a growing client base and a strong portfolio of repeat business that reflects the quality of its work and partnerships.

“We have four cornerstones to our company values that maintain our high standards and allow us to continuously maintain this repeat custom from our valued clients,” begins John Handforth, Managing Director of HH Construction. “One of those main cornerstones is ‘Client Focus’. We aim to be highly dedicated to every client we work with and treat every project like it’s our last, holding ourselves to the highest standard of workmanship and performance. With every client, we put their requirements and expectations at the forefront of every project we work on and try to incorporate their expectations into our standard of work.

“Our other three cornerstones are ‘Passionate’, ‘Integrity’, and ‘Teamwork’, which are integral to building and maintaining our company culture,” John continues. “Passion and pride are the driving force at HH Construction. Our dedicated team is committed to creating solid foundations and shaping the landscape with unparalleled precision and care. Integrity shines through in every aspect of our work. Our culture of honesty, reliability, and ethical conduct fosters trust with our clients, providing a productive and positive work environment. Teamwork thrives strongly and is at the heart of everything we do. We take extreme pride in our unity and welcome everyone as part of our family. All our projects are completed with one team effort.”

Project precision

This commitment to excellence extends beyond HH Construction’s culture and into the strategic investments that it continues to make across its operations. By continually upgrading its fleet and plant machinery, the company ensures it can deliver projects with the highest levels of precision, efficiency, and safety.

“Making good investments into our fleet and plant is highly important in maintaining our standards. Being a groundworks and civils company, all our plant is of the highest specification; our larger machinery, for example, is fitted with top-of-the-range GPS equipment to allow our operatives to excavate precisely when completing foundation and drainage works,” John elaborates. “We’ve recently invested in our own vacuum excavator and fleet of tippers. The vacuum excavator allows us to work safer on road and street works and remove the risk of utility strikes, and our new fleet of tippers allows us to effectively move aggregates and earth to and from sites.”

HH Construction’s investment strategy also reflects a broader commitment to locality, accountability, and sustainable business development – prioritising British industries and the long-term relationships that underpin them.

“Locality is important to me because investing in British companies gives me a stronger sense of familiarity, transparency, and accountability. I feel more confident investing in businesses that operate within a legal, regulatory, and economic environment that I understand well,” John explains. “In addition, I value supporting the domestic economy and contributing to the growth of British businesses and employment. Investing locally can also reduce certain uncertainties linked to foreign markets, such as currency fluctuations, political instability, or differences in corporate governance standards.”

As HH Construction approaches its 20th anniversary, its continued growth reflects the values and principles that have guided its operations from the start.

“Over the past two decades, the growth and success of HH Construction have been driven by a combination of consistency, strong relationships, and a commitment to quality,” John reveals, reflecting on the company’s journey thus far. “From the beginning, the company has focused on delivering reliable business and maintaining high standards across every project, which has helped build trust with clients and partners. Another key factor has been the dedication of the team. Having skilled staff, loyal subcontractors, and dependable suppliers has allowed the business to grow steadily while maintaining its reputation. Adapting to changes in the construction industry, embracing new methods and technologies where appropriate, and remaining financially disciplined have also been important.

“Equally significant has been the company’s emphasis on long-term relationships and repeat business,” he says. “Much of our growth has come through recommendations and returning clients, which reflects the importance placed on communication, professionalism, and delivering projects successfully.”

Over the course of less than two decades, HH Construction has built something that takes most businesses far longer to achieve: a reputation strong enough to do most of the selling on its own. The values that shaped the business from the start are the same ones that continue driving it forward, and this consistency is the key to success in an industry where trust is everything.

“Looking ahead to the rest of 2026, our main priorities are centred around maintaining sustainable growth while continuing to deliver the high standards our clients expect from HH Construction. With a strong pipeline of commercial, supermarket, and care home projects already underway, a key focus will be ensuring these developments are completed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality,” John affirms. “Another important objective for the year is investing in our people and operational capabilities. This includes supporting staff development, improving efficiencies within project management and delivery, and continuing to adapt to evolving industry standards and technologies.

“As we approach our 20th anniversary, 2026 is also an opportunity to reflect on the progress the company has made while positioning the business for the future,” he concludes. “Our aim is to continue growing in a measured and responsible way, ensuring the company remains financially strong, competitive, and well placed for long-term success.”
