The UK construction industry is facing increasing pressure to build faster, more efficiently, and with lower environmental impact. At Housing 2025 in Manchester, Russell Roof Tiles responded with a breakthrough that could reshape how roofing is specified and installed in Britain.

Rather than a minor upgrade, this is a true shift in format and efficiency. The new product, unveiled to developers, architects and local authorities, was designed to meet the needs of both large-scale social housing projects and private sector developers. With speed, cost, and sustainability at the heart of its design, this innovation could set a new benchmark for the roofing industry.

Innovation in Form and Function

At the core of the new system is a triple roof tile that brings together three concrete tiles into one interlocking unit. While the design is compact, the benefits are extensive. It takes just 10.9 tiles to cover a square metre, which is far fewer than traditional tile formats.

This change reduces installation time and allows roofers to work more efficiently without the need for left or right-handed tiles. The design includes a 14 millimetre leading edge, offering a sleek, modern look that mirrors slate or clay tiles but retains the durability and affordability of concrete roof tiles.

Available in seven colour options, the tile has been designed to suit both heritage and contemporary housing schemes. The new system is also fully compatible with Russell Roof Tiles’ existing accessories, including dry verge systems, ventilation products and roof clips.

Investment in British Manufacturing

This roofing innovation has been made possible by a major upgrade to Russell Roof Tiles’ manufacturing facility in Burton-on-Trent. Backed by an £18.5 million investment, the site now features a fully automated production line dedicated to the new system.

Using advanced technology, the facility ensures consistent quality and greater production efficiency. The modernised setup enables the company to meet growing demand while maintaining high standards in material performance and finish.

Engineering teams worked to overcome the challenges of producing a thinner, lighter tile without compromising strength or weather resistance. Through updated moulding processes and precise control of curing conditions, they have delivered a concrete roof tile that balances durability with streamlined production.

A Solution for Today’s Market Challenges

With the UK construction sector dealing with labour shortages and material costs, the new roofing system has been designed to reduce pressure on site teams and supply chains.

Installation time is up to 33 percent faster than traditional tiles, and site labour costs can be reduced by between 15 and 40 percent. The lighter weight and smaller tile count also mean fewer deliveries are needed, with estimates suggesting a 40 percent reduction in vehicle movements.

For developers and contractors, this means lower emissions, simpler planning, and reduced disruption on site. For local authorities and housing associations, the system offers an opportunity to reduce costs and timelines on housing projects without compromising on design or durability.

The launch at Housing 2025 attracted interest from across the industry. Contractors who attended praised the simplicity of the system, noting that faster installation could help them meet deadlines and reduce costs on larger projects.

A Step Forward for UK Roofing

Russell Roof Tiles’ latest innovation offers a practical solution to key industry challenges, including labour shortages, carbon reduction and build speed. By refining a proven material into a smarter system, the company has created a product that improves what already works. It’s a clear example of how thoughtful British manufacturing can deliver measurable value across the housing sector.
