JB Construction 1 delivers complex groundworks through long-term partnerships, technical expertise, and continued investment in people and plant
From humble beginnings as a small regional contractor in the West Midlands, JB Construction 1 Ltd (JB) has grown into a UK-wide organisation, delivering complex schemes across multiple sectors including retail and commercial developments, industrial and logistics projects, and education schemes. With a turnover of more than £30 million, the groundworks, civil engineering and concrete flooring specialist currently has a variety of exciting projects underway for major companies.
Established around 17 years ago, JB operates across the UK and has a strong presence in the Midlands, South West and South East. It provides a comprehensive package comprising concrete flooring, bulk earthworks, soil stabilisation, drainage and infrastructure, foundations and substructures, roads, car parks and external works. Construction Director, Charles Lawton, elaborates on JB’s expansion, key projects and technological investments.

“Our growth has been organic and built on long-term relationships, consistent operational delivery, and continual reinvestment back into the business,” he opens. “Today, we operate with over 550 items of plant and more than 150 direct employees across multiple specialist divisions, supported by a strong leadership structure. Despite our growth, we maintain the agility and accountability of a privately owned contractor while remaining grounded in the principles that built the company: reliability, accountability and delivering exactly what we commit to.”
Alongside the delivery of numerous education schemes in Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire, JB has completed two other major developments, the first of which is a high-profile scheme for Escapade Silverstone. This comprises 60 premium residences and a state-of-the-art clubhouse overlooking the Silverstone racing circuit. The company is also working on multiple nationwide schemes for superstore giants ALDI across various locations and recently handed over an industrial unit in Avonmouth known as Plot 26 – a 215,000-square-foot high-specification industrial facility with extensive concrete service yard and car parking infrastructure.
“These projects highlight our ability to manage complex ground conditions, deliver to demanding programmes and maintain consistently high standards across multiple regions,” explains Charles. “Alongside project delivery, we continue to invest in plant, people and digital systems, focusing on sustainable and controlled growth rather than simply increasing turnover.”
Transforming processes
Sustainability is increasingly central to how the company approaches ground engineering. Wherever possible, JB prioritises the re-use of site-won materials through soil stabilisation or crushing and screening, reducing off-site disposal, lorry movements and embodied carbon. Not only does this method support environmental objectives, it also delivers significant programme and cost efficiencies for clients. Innovation is another crucial element of the business, with the company making significant investment in GPS-guided excavators and digital site workflows over the past few years.
“Machine control technology has transformed how we deliver earthworks and infrastructure,” highlights Charles. “It improves accuracy, reduces rework, enhances safety and drives productivity. Operators can work directly from 3D models, reducing reliance on traditional setting out and accelerating programme delivery. In parallel, we have implemented Procore across the business, digitising QA processes, HSEQ documentation, drawings and commercial reporting. This provides real-time project visibility and strengthens governance at both project and board level.”
For JB, innovation is not about adopting technology for its own sake, but about improving efficiency, protecting margin, reducing risk and delivering certainty to clients. Charles strongly believes the industry “must continue embracing digital solutions in order to close the productivity gap construction has historically faced.”
Additionally, JB owns and manages a fleet of over 550 machines, allowing the group to maintain programme certainty, reduce exposure to market volatility, ensure consistent safety and maintenance standards, and mobilise quickly across multiple regions.
“Controlling our plant fleet has been a deliberate long-term strategy,” reveals Charles. “Our in-house plant and tool hire division provides operational flexibility and strengthens cost control. In an industry where margins are tight and supply chains can be unpredictable, self-delivery and asset ownership give us greater resilience and stability.”

This stability, in conjunction with trust and reliability, is critical for JB when it comes to client relationships. With a reputation built on problem-solving, consistency and delivering promises, JB works primarily with main contractors operating in the commercial, retail, industrial and education sectors.
“Our core client base includes long-standing partners such as DSP, ALDI, Barnwood, E G Carter and Francis Construction,” Charles shares. “We believe in long-term collaboration rather than transactional contracting. These relationships are maintained through transparent commercial management, early engagement at pre-construction stage, strong site leadership, and honest, proactive communication. Our clients play an important role in our national expansion, and we remain committed to supporting them wherever we operate.”
Developing talent
People are fundamental to JB’s success, and the company’s philosophy centres around clients, employees, partners and suppliers. “We have built a culture rooted in accountability, progression and loyalty,” Charles confirms. “Many members of our leadership team have developed internally, reflecting our commitment to long-term career development.”
The company actively invests in apprenticeships in plant operations, groundworks and site supervision, T-Level placements, leadership development programmes and technical upskilling, working closely with AccXel Construction School and Walsall College to help attract and develop new talent.
“The construction industry faces a well-documented skills shortage, particularly in groundworks and plant operations,” Charles explains. “Addressing this is not just a responsibility, but a necessity. As a business, we are focused on creating structured pathways into the industry and developing future leaders who can help modernise and strengthen the sector.”
Focusing on the delivery of high-quality, profitable work, JB is prioritising strong project performance over pursuing growth for its own sake. “In 2026, we will look to improve operational efficiency and margin performance, execute further digital integration, strengthen leadership capacity within the business and continue to support and grow alongside our core clients,” states Charles. “In the next three to five years, I would like to see JB widely recognised nationally as a leading self-delivering groundworks specialist and an employer of choice within the sector.
“More broadly, I believe the future of groundworks lies in greater self-delivery, digital adoption and investment in people. It also requires smarter material management and a greater emphasis on sustainable ground solutions — reducing waste, lowering carbon and maximising the value of site-won resources.”
Charles outlines the company’s ambition is to continue growing in a measured and disciplined way as it contributes positively to the evolution of the industry. With groundworks often the first trade on site, he believes the delivery of the ground package sets the tone for the entire project.
“At JB, we take that responsibility seriously,” Charles concludes. “We are proud of how far the business has come and we remain ambitious about how far it can go.”
