Recently named one of the ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’ by the London Stock Exchange Group, Logistical Building Services (Electrical) is working on some of the most impressive housing developments across London and the South of England

Originally established in Southampton, Logistical Building Services (Electrical) has since become particularly well known for the projects it has delivered in London. LBS (Electrical), as we will henceforth call the company, was founded by Colin Hiscock in 2008 with the aim of becoming a leading mechanical, electrical, and plumbing contractor in the capital and the South of England. Now in its 11th year, the journey undertaken by Colin and his loyal associates is as exciting as ever, with the business having gone from strength to strength over the past decade.

For Hilary Williams, Finance and H&S Director, LBS (Electrical) has become a popular choice of contractor for its clients, chiefly because it can complete the installation of all aspects of building services. “What is more,” she clarifies, “most of these services are completed in-house by our own team; reassuring our customers of the quality they will receive.”

The ability to provide a diverse range of services is inextricably linked with its commitment to continually develop the skills of its workforce. The company has experienced a significant increase in headcount over the past few years, now employing over 150 staff. “Crucially,” Hilary notes, “we maintain the ethos that every individual matters and we pay special attention to each person; assessing their strengths and weaknesses and helping them to develop as part of the company. We believe that this kind of engagement is essential to their connection with the business and helps make LBS (Electrical) different to other businesses. At heart we maintain the small, family run business that Colin originally established.

“Over time, we have helped our team of Plumbers and Electricians become Site Foremen and Project Managers,” she continues. “Our apprenticeship scheme is also yielding excellent results. Ben Jennings, a former apprentice of Colin’s, is now our Electrical Director, so there is no doubt about the opportunities we can offer. We are always interested in working with talented and motivated individuals and anyone can visit our website and social media platforms to see how they can apply for the apprenticeship scheme.”

2019 marks the tenth year since LBS (Electrical) began operating in London and has since won several landmark projects. In 2017 the company finished work on three tower blocks, each over 22 storeys high; ultimately earning the business a place on this year’s ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Britain’ report. “We are very proud to be included,” Hilary smiles. “Being featured in the report truly acknowledges the achievement of Colin’s initial aim and the hard work and commitment of each person working under the LBS (Electrical) banner.”

While LBS (Electrical) was working on the tower blocks, the company grabbed the opportunity to branch out into the design and build of energy centres and was awarded its first energy centre on the prestigious Blackfriars Circus development in Southwark. The contractor was tasked with carrying out the complete mechanical and electrical fit out from start to finish, including the installation of the centralised district heating and cooling systems. LBS (Electrical) also provided a water tank room with four tanks and five booster sets, inclusive of a rainwater harvesting system. Following the completion of this project, the company was awarded Innovative and Co-Operative Sub-Contractor for 2018 from Barratt Homes, East London.

Another remarkable project that the organisation has left its mark on is the renovation of the King Edward VII Estate in Midhurst. Consisting of Grade II and Grade II* Listed buildings, this project refurbished these pre-existing structures into luxury apartments, duplexes, and houses. Currently working on 36 high-specification apartments, LBS (Electrical) was commissioned to add these apartments to the pre-existing communal boiler house previously installed by the company during the first phase in 2014. Including both refurbishments and new developments, the second phase of the project has seen the installation of twin plate HIUs, radiator heating systems to the refurbished apartments, and underfloor heating to the new builds alongside the electrical installation.

Noticing an increase in demand for more reliable fire protection installations over the last couple of years, LBS (Electrical) is considering this as a potential niche focus for the business. “We are looking to establish a presence in the future as we feel our capabilities and team can add value to this particular sector,” Hilary maintains.

“Admittedly, the present economic climate is such that next year may potentially be hard for everyone,” she predicts. “We are happy to say, however, that we have already got over 60 per cent of our order book filled for 2020. We are particularly focused on completing the ongoing mechanical and electrical installation for Phase F of the Upton Gardens development in Stratford. Looking into the future, we intend to continue expanding steadily while maintaining a close relationship with all our clients and sub-contractors,” Hilary concludes.
