Headquartered in Forus in Sandnes, Malthus AS and its two subsidiaries in Canada and the UK create modular solutions that not only meet each customer’s needs but also are also durable, functional and user-friendly. Commenting on the rise of Malthus in the construction sector is Arild Ollestad, Chief Executive Officer of Malthus AS: “Since our inception in 1973 we have evolved into a provider of temporary and permanent modular buildings and expanded our operations over the years into both Canada and the UK. In Canada we are based on the East Coast, where we have worked on several projects, including the delivery of a 1100 accommodation camp for a mining company. Meanwhile, in the UK we have developed an 850 person accommodation camp in the Shetlands for Petrofac and Total. This is a great camp and a strong example of our capabilities; it is here that we also set up an office/workshop facility that was used to provide offices in the construction area.”
Announced in February 2011, the project for Petrofac was executed on the Shetland Islands as part of the Total Lagan Tormore Development Project. For Malthus, the scope of work included the complete turnkey delivery of the project, from utilities, the building and installation of the modular camp with all facilities in place such as the kitchen, diner, gym and shops. Valued at £28 million, the project was undertaken during January to October 2011 and had a original lease period of three years; designed to a high standard, the camp offered energy saving solutions and a modern design. The camp is still in operation and provides high quality accommodation for demanding customers.
Providing a home away from home to those working on long-term projects, Malthus Camp offers a shortcut for temporary dwellings, canteens and offices that are created from modular construction. Key to delivering customers a home away from home, Malthus focuses on comfort and well being during the construction of a camp; this is tailored to the size of the project, the needs of the users and the proximity to work. Aware that studies indicate productivity is connected to a content workforce, Malthus installs modern comfort amenities in a social and pleasant environment that has facilities such as a canteen, shared TV lounge and other options; these could include an administrative office, sports hall, fitness room, internet care or a pub. Aside from social areas, Malthus also supplies clients with required facilities; these include service buildings such as a bank, doctors and dental surgery. Each person on site, meanwhile, receives a furnished bedroom, complete with a bed, desk, wardrobe, chair and private washroom.
Proud to adapt to customer demands, Malthus uses its flexibility to meet local conditions and preferences while also completing the project in a timely and efficient manner. Satisfied customers include Aker Solutions, Forsvarsbygg, Norsk Hydro, Statoil ASA, Total and NCC Construction AS. Discussing another notable project, Arild states: “We also undertook providing Shell with Norway’s largest construction site village for the Ormen Lange project, which provides gas to the UK market.”
Covering a total area of 60,000 square metres, the Ormen Lange project included 2992 rooms at hotel standards as well as temporary offices, changing rooms, service buildings, welfare buildings, a sports hall and a canteen. Additional requirements include temporary buildings for offices, lounges, dining rooms and WCs inside the works area. Officially opened in December 2004, three weeks in advance of the occupancy deadline, the construction-site village was set up with a total of 50 separate residential rigs over two stories; each of these rigs had 44 residential units.
Having gained a strong reputation for meeting the stringent requirements of blue chip organisations in the oil & gas, mining and construction industries in Norway, the UK and Canada, Malthus will seek opportunities to further strengthen its international presence as a specialist in modular buildings. “With our ability to serve demanding customers, our good HSEQ statistics and focus on quality, we will continue to provide the best solutions to our existing customers while also broadening our business into new geographical areas,” Arild concludes.
