Having recently celebrated 15 years in operation, SPE Ltd is a fiercely independent, specialist company offering supply, repairs and maintenance services for sewage pumps, sewage treatment plants and dirty water pumping stations across a broad base of applications

Founded by Richard Smith and his wife Ruth Smith during March 2001, SPE Ltd. has grown into a national specialist business with extensive coverage that allows it to supply, repair and maintain sewage pumps, sewage treatment plants, pumping stations, dirty water pumps and all types of waste water and offmains drainage systems, including Klargester, Clearwater, Entec, Balmoral and Hepworth sewage treatment systems. The firm is also increasingly active in the design, supply and installation of rainwater harvesting (grey water) systems and garden irrigation systems in both domestic and industrial configurations.

“As a company we have always worked on sewage treatment plants and pumping stations and have grown to cover work throughout the UK. We entered into the market for grey water around five years ago and this has become an increasingly important sector for the business,” explains Managing Director, Richard Smith. “Today our customer base ranges from nuclear power stations, the National Trust, housing associations and local authorities to police forces and domestic clients. All of these sectors are growing well, while our facilities management database for customers has also continued to expand over the years.”

Through its diversified portfolio of clients operating a varied base of industry sectors, SPE has continued to enjoy high levels of business and undertaken several unique projects in recent months. During June 2016 for example, the company completed the refurbishment of a rotating biological filter dating back to the days of the Second World War. The project called for the restoration of two filters, both of which form part of a sewage treatment works in Blockley, Moreton-In-Marsh. During the operation of the filtration system wastewater from the primary settlement tank is continuously sprayed over the filter and organics within the water are aerobically degraded by the biofilm on the filter media. Over time the system’s rotating assembly had seized, while several of its arms has corroded and collapsed. Knowing that parts for this system had gone out of production several years ago, SPE confidently grasped the opportunity to demonstrate its abilities in refurbishing equipment of all types and specifications. With minimum downtime, SPE successfully stripped, reengineered, re-assembled and commissioned the system back into full operation. The system has since continued to run without issue and is now being maintained by the company on a monthly basis. With SPE providing its expert specialist attention to the filter, the client should expect to see the system continue to run for many years to come.

In addition to providing refurbishment services to older filtration equipment, SPE has also been involved in the development of brand new equipment for the nuclear industry in recent months. During October 2016 the company announced that it had been awarded a contract to complete the installation and commissioning of a 150-person sewage treatment plant and pumping station, which will service both offices and various contracting agencies during the development of the new Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant. The award of the contract stipulated that the work had to be completed within a short time and included the design and fit of a large electrical control kiosk, the supply and wiring up of pumps and UV filters as well as the unit’s associated control systems.

The work on the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station sewage treatment plant and pumping station was successfully completed on time and during early November 2016, SPE announced that the systems had been fully commissioned and handed over to the client. “This job was undertaken over a very short period of time, especially considering the size of the project,” Richard says. “Working on nuclear power stations requires a high level of workplace professionalism and in-depth knowledge of EDF procedures, and I am proud to say that our team of engineers have delivered a first rate piece of work.”

Having completed several highly successful projects while continuing to grow steadily within the market, SPE is keen to draw on its leading bespoke service to further develop its market presence and collaboration with its clients throughout 2017 and beyond. “SPE differentiates itself through the specialist mechanical and electrical services that the company provides to applications such as sewage treatment plants and pumping stations. We don’t actually manufacture products, rather we are able to buy in parts and modify them to suit the needs on an individual site,” Richard concludes. “During the next 12 months we will look to continue to grow the company’s database of clients, as well as striving to become involved in projects sooner and thereby being more proactive during the design stage.”
