Technology, expertise and community focus underpin Triton Construction’s next phase of growth

Triton Construction is a leading UK construction contractor delivering high-quality new build, refurbishment, fit-out and design-and-build projects across a wide range of sectors. Established in 2005, the company has built a strong reputation for providing tailored construction solutions throughout the North of England, working with clients in commercial, education, healthcare, industrial, retail, residential and public sector environments.

“When we last spoke, the business was coming through a challenging period,” shares Paul Clarkson, Managing Director. “Turnover had dipped due to a combination of factors, including the election, Labour’s budget and wider global uncertainty around tariffs. Activity had been subdued for six-to-nine months, but by last summer we were beginning to see an uptick in workload and were optimistic about entering a more stable period.

“That momentum carried through, and we entered the current financial year with the strongest forward order book in our history: close to £50 million. However, geopolitical tensions and ongoing economic uncertainty have since slowed the market considerably. While we’re seeing encouraging signs, with inquiries improving over the past six-to-eight weeks, volatility continues to be a defining feature of the construction sector.

“One area that has provided resilience for us is our ongoing work with Whitbread through the Premier Inn framework. As the company restructures parts of its estate, we’ve secured a steady pipeline of projects that has helped offset softer conditions elsewhere in the market,” he explains.

“Despite the turnover reduction we experienced last year, we’re expecting to report an improved profit position when our accounts are published. Looking ahead, if market conditions continue to stabilise and fuel costs remain under control, we’re hopeful that the recent increase in enquiries will translate into stronger workloads, improved turnover and better margins over the coming year.”

Alongside its project work, Triton is making a significant investment in the business through the implementation of a new ERP system, having selected the supplier, signed contracts and begun the initial stages of the rollout. “It’s a major programme that will take around nine-to-12 months to complete,” Paul explains, “but we expect it to deliver substantial benefits in terms of efficiency, visibility and operational control.

“AI also remains a key strategic focus for us. While we haven’t yet fully implemented our plans, we’re preparing to launch a secure, closed AI platform that will allow us to explore the technology while keeping company data protected.

“One of the biggest opportunities we see is in helping us manage the vast amount of information generated throughout a construction project. The Building Safety Act has increased the importance of maintaining a clear and comprehensive audit trail, with large volumes of quality records, photographs and compliance data being collected by both our teams and supply chain partners.

“We’re exploring how AI can help automate the organisation, through indexing and retrieval of that information, creating a more accessible and searchable record for clients at project completion. Ultimately, we see AI and our new ERP system working hand in hand, helping us improve efficiency, strengthen compliance and deliver greater value to our clients.”

Among Triton’s recent community-focused projects and following on from the successful completion of Base 71 Youth Zone in Barnsley is the delivery of Vault Youth Zone in Preston city centre, an £8.7 million purpose-built facility developed in partnership with OnSide Youth Zones and Preston City Council. The three-storey centre provides a safe and inspiring space for young people, featuring sports, fitness, arts, wellbeing and training facilities. Delivered over 61 weeks, the project overcame challenging site constraints and now supports thousands of young people each year, creating lasting social value across the region.

Another standout project is the delivery of Temple Newsam Home Farm for Leeds City College, a specialist further education facility designed and constructed to Passivhaus standards. Developed in collaboration with the client and wider design team, the scheme demonstrates Triton’s ability to translate ambitious low-carbon design principles into a high-performing, operational building.

The project adopted a fabric-first approach, prioritising energy efficiency through high levels of insulation, airtight construction, minimised thermal bridging and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery. Triton worked closely with the architect, consultants, Passivhaus specialists and subcontractors to ensure the design intent was maintained throughout construction, recognising that even minor on-site changes could affect the building’s performance.

The project also supported embodied carbon reduction through the retention and restoration of existing building fabric at Rose Lodge, alongside careful procurement, waste minimisation and efficient construction sequencing. By combining robust quality management with a collaborative approach, Triton is helping deliver a highly sustainable education facility that will provide long-term environmental benefits for Luminate Leeds City College.

“One particularly rewarding project we’re also involved in is at Hilltop School in Rotherham,” Paul adds, “a special educational needs school that was in a very poor state of repair when we first visited around 18 months ago. Working alongside Yorkshire Children’s Charity, Henry Boot, GMI, B&K and numerous supply chain partners, we’re helping to transform the site through a largely charitable effort.

“Triton is delivering three new classrooms to expand the school, with most of the work being provided free of charge by contractors and their supply chains. The project is a great example of what can be achieved when organisations come together to support their local communities. For us, it’s about more than construction; it’s about creating lasting social value and giving something back where it’s needed most.”

While the market remains challenging, Triton is beginning to see encouraging signs of renewed confidence and increased activity. If economic conditions continue to stabilise and some of the geopolitical uncertainty eases, Paul believes the company is well positioned to recover the turnover lost over the past year and build on the progress already made.

“Continuing our relationship with Preferred Homes Extra Care facilities, we previously completed a care scheme in Beeston and are now progressing a larger £14.5 million extra care development in Shrewsbury for the same client. The project has been delivered using modern methods of construction to achieve rapid watertightness, allowing internal works to progress alongside the external envelope, improving programme certainty and cost control. It was procured through a negotiated PCSA following the earlier Beeston scheme rather than a competitive tender, and we currently have several further schemes in the pipeline across our industrial, commercial, and civil sectors.

“We entered this financial year with the strongest forward order book in our history, and our focus now is on converting that into sustainable growth while maintaining the improved profitability we’ve achieved. At the same time, we’re investing in the future of the business through our new ERP system, the adoption of AI technologies and continued development of our people and processes.

“Looking ahead, we’ll continue to focus on the sectors where we’ve built strong expertise, including industrial, commercial, hospitality, education, extra care and civil engineering projects. We’re also increasing our focus on public sector opportunities and framework appointments, where we see significant potential for growth over the coming years.

“Above all, our strategy remains centred on maintaining a diverse and resilient business,” Paul concludes. “That approach has served us well through a period of considerable market volatility, and it gives us confidence that we’re well placed to continue delivering for our clients, our people and the communities in which we work.”
