Uncover how J&B Hopkins’ modern approach to MEP services fuels strong industry partnerships

For over 45 years, Hopkins has maintained a tradition of delivering high-quality installations. Since its incorporation in 1978, the company has progressively grown and developed to offer a comprehensive mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) design and build service to the construction industry and end-user markets. Based in a bespoke built office in Fareham, Hampshire, with additional locations in Surrey and West Sussex, Hopkins is committed to providing exceptional levels of customer service and industry expertise. Mike Jenkins, Sales Director, presents an overview of the business as it stands today.

“At the moment, Hopkins boasts a £60 million turnover and employs over 190 staff across three regional offices and seven delivery departments,” he opens. “We are proud to say that over five percent of our workforce are apprentices or trainees, and 17 percent of our employees have been with us for ten years or more. The Board of Directors embarked on the new business direction over three years ago, since then the business has evolved into a more modern and progressive company, which is what we actively try to convey. This resulted in significant growth, as we are now the number 25 M&E contractor in the country as ranked by BESA, coinciding with our largest ever secured forward workload, standing at over £120 million” he shares.

Mike sheds light on projects where Hopkins’ services are particularly useful, highlighting their expertise in working with clients in all sectors. “Through the mechanical, electrical, design and build services we provide to the construction industry, we have become heavily involved in decarbonisation and energy projects. In fact, we established an energy division within Hopkins approximately three years ago to promote sustainability and decarbonisation to support our client base and expand the business whilst other operational departments continued to focus on mechanical and electrical services for Tier 1 contractors throughout the South, South East, London and all the way across to the lower Midlands.

Trusted partner

“Usually, the contractors who collaborate with us fully trust our abilities, allowing us to give them early cost plans, designed independently while working with the professional team and end-users. Our in-house team of over 30 skilled designers and preconstruction engineers collaborates at our head office to support all aspects of project delivery. By leveraging their skills and adding value in-house, we can offer the best results and cost savings to the clients who trust us to handle the process, rather than engaging in a race to the bottom through tendering. Moreover, we have a bigger supplier base than a traditional consultant would, with many contractors, manufacturers, and suppliers visiting our offices daily and sharing up-to-date insights and innovation. As a result, our supply chain enables us to stay at the cutting-edge of design, therefore allowing our clients to trust in our ability to handle the successful phase of preconstruction,” he continues.

One recently successful project showcasing Hopkins’ ability is a £13 million student accommodation scheme in London, which is poised to grow the company’s presence in the city. “The project at Old Kent Road is around halfway through and progressing very well, with over 100 operatives on-site. Additionally, we have secured a project in Pall Mall, Central London. Collaborating with contractors we know and who appreciate the benefits of our services, aiming for quality rather than simply establishing a presence in London through volume, we hope to expand our presence through a phased strategic growth strategy,” says Mike.

Drive for excellence

Elsewhere in the country, Hopkins is involved in several exciting projects. “In Brighton, we have secured the design and preconstruction of a sizeable student accommodation project, expected to begin in March 2025 and to last for three years, resulting in 1700 additional apartments. Hopkins work in the education sector is currently going from strength to strength, and we are recognised as the market leader in that sector. Furthermore, we are engaged in several projects for the Ministry of Justice, Healthcare, Blue Light and Residential sectors and look forward to sharing updates on these future successes.”

Hopkins is not only involved in large-scale projects but also excels in delivering specialised, niche end-user schemes. These projects often come with greater complexity, particularly in the logistical and installation phases, which are managed through its Special Projects department. Additionally, for many years, Hopkins has provided reliable Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) and general maintenance services via its in-house Technical Services department, specialising in the hospitality and leisure sectors across the South, with a 24/7 call-out service.

The success of these endeavours is largely due to the expertise and dedication of Hopkins’ highly skilled staff. Recognising their vital importance, Mike explains how the company supports its employees and creates a positive working culture. “Since the launch of our business direction plan in 2021, the business has put staff in the forefront of its drive for excellence which include employee recognition events, charity initiatives, wellbeing and mental health support and a monthly newsletter. We also actively support local community activities, clubs, schools, and charities through sponsorships and fundraising initiatives.”

Green commitment

Scott Adams, Director, adds: “We have developed a framework within the business to enable our employees to progress with a transparent pathway. For instance, in our design department, we have introduced an internal apprenticeship program. We provide a more industry focused learning experience rather than just developing skills they learned in university; we also measure their performance against what we require and track their development within Hopkins.”

Addressing the topic of sustainability, Scott outlines the various ways in which Hopkins is enhancing its operations to become more environmentally conscious. “We are continuously expanding our electric vehicle fleet and upgrading to more efficient commercial vehicles. We also work closely with our supply chain to reduce waste when sourcing and supplying materials for site. In our offices, we’ve implemented sustainable initiatives such as heat pumps, solar energy, and waste management plans, all aimed at significantly reducing our carbon footprint over the next five years.

“On the project side, we’re heavily involved in the decarbonisation and energy sectors, reflecting our commitment to promoting sustainability. This includes numerous battery augmentation schemes across the UK, ongoing commercial solar projects, and shore-to-ship charging systems for large commercial vessels. Essentially, we’re active in any area related to sustainability, decarbonisation, and electrification – from consultation and funding to delivery,” he explains.

Building on its successful track record and reputation, Hopkins consistently delivers ground-breaking sustainable projects across various sectors and locations by leveraging the expertise of its talented team.
